National Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day

Written by Board Member, Diana Dufur-Day

One of the most difficult things we go through as humans is the loss of a beloved pet. Not only are you losing a companion, but a family member, therapist, and sometimes best friend. When our loved ones cross the Rainbow Bridge, we too must cross our own bridge: that of sadness and pain to fond remembrance and love.

With National Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day on August 28th, we are given an opportunity to revisit the fond memories of our cherished pets who’ve crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Edna Clyne-Rekhy, a 19-year-old Scottish artist, is the author of the original Rainbow Bridge poem. Written through her own grieving process of losing her first dog, a beloved Labrador named Major, the action of putting pen to paper allowed her to express her emotions and pay tribute. Years later, Edna showed this poem to her husband who encouraged her to publish it. Instead, she copied the piece and passed it to family and friends as a token of her sympathy during the loss of a pet. Although she never added her name, the cherished poem for pets who’ve passed on is now credited to her.

Some ways to do something special to remember your pet on National Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day.

  1. Plant something in their honor or place a stone in your garden to remind you of them.

  2. Visit your pet’s favorite spot, whether it is as far as a park or as close as their favorite spot on the couch.

  3. Create something from the heart. A memory book, poem, or piece of artwork.

  4. Donate food, treats, or similar needed items to a local animal shelter.

  5. Donate pet food to a local food shelter, as many provide for families in need who have pets.

  6. Donate to a non-profit, like Hobo’s Healing Heart, who helps families needing assistance with emergency veterinarian care or cremation.

  7. Light a candle in memory of your pet. The light can symbolize the joy and warmth they brought into your life.

  8. Share memories with families and friends

  9. Get a tattoo! A lasting memory of that beloved pet.

National Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is a time for love, happy memories, and gratitude for the companions who accompany us across our lives. Whether furry or feathered, scaled or slimy, we know our loved ones who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge are waiting for us, and will always be with us in our hearts and spirits.
