National Pet Month

By Penny Thompson

May is National Pet Month, a time filled with wagging tails, gentle purr’s, happy hops, and all the unconditional love our furry (and not-so-furry) companions bring into our lives. From slobbery kisses to those knowing eyes that seem to understand us better than anyone else, pets have a way of healing hearts in ways words simply can’t. They remind us daily of loyalty, resilience, and the quiet comfort of simply not being alone. But while this month is full of celebration, it’s also a meaningful time to reflect on the responsibility that comes with loving a pet.

It’s easy to celebrate the joyful moments—morning greetings, playful zoomies, and cozy nights curled up together. But behind every happy pet is a commitment: to care, to protect, and to advocate. Not all animals are given the same loving start. Many still face neglect, abandonment, or life in overcrowded shelters, waiting patiently for someone to choose them. National Pet Month isn’t just about celebrating the pets we have—it’s about remembering those still waiting for their chance.

I can speak personally when I say that every pet has a story, and sometimes those stories aren’t easy. I have 3 rescued deaf dogs (Grey, Juvia, and Millianna) among my crew of fur babies. All these dogs were born deaf due to irresponsible breeding or a lack of knowledge when breeding merles together. Or simple genetics of Dalmatians having that chance to be born with this special needs disorder (in dogs). My family took the time to educate, ourselves on proper leash training skills and sign language commands to keep my 3 deaf dogs stay safe in this world – who otherwise would have just spent their lives in shelters. Each experience has shaped not only how we care for our own animals but also how we advocate for others. It’s a reminder that bringing a pet into your life isn’t just a moment, it’s a lifelong promise.

Responsible pet ownership goes beyond food, water, and shelter. It means proper veterinary care, training, socialization, and making informed decisions before bringing a pet home. Whether that’s choosing adoption through a shelter or rescue, or carefully researching a reputable breeder, every choice matters. When we take the time to educate ourselves, we’re not only improving the life of one pet, we’re contributing to a larger movement of compassion and change.

At Hobo’s Healing Heart, we believe that loving pets means showing up for all of them—not just the easy moments, but the hard ones too. National Pet Month is a chance to celebrate the joy animals bring while also committing to being part of the solution. Supporting rescues, fostering, volunteering, and simply spreading awareness can make a world of difference.

This National Pet Month, let’s celebrate in the most meaningful way we can: by honoring the bond we share with our pets and extending that love to those still waiting. Because every pet deserves more than just a home—they deserve a life filled with love, safety, and a whole lot of tail wags.
